As I am nosy, what are the inner sizes of your Lady Darbies?

Regarding your key problem, are you sure that the
thread really stops short? It might also be that
the screw pitch is slightly different and thus one
can srew in only so far.

Anyway, I ususally open Darbies in screwing in
a number of turns, and then pulling on the key.
It works with most of my models. And also your
key might be too long, as a fitting key when opening
pushes on the right edge of the locking case you
painted blue in your drawing.

In a nutshell:
1) Screw in as far as you can or dare
2) Pull on the key
3) Report your result
